Static vs Dynamic IP Address — What's the Difference?

Most home users have a dynamic IP that changes regularly. Businesses use static IPs that never change. Here's why it matters and how to check yours.

Every device on the internet has an IP address — but not all IP addresses behave the same way. Some change every time you reconnect. Others stay fixed forever. Here's what that means and why it matters.

Not sure what an IP address is at all? Start here: what is an IP address? →

What is a Dynamic IP Address?

A dynamic IP address is one that changes periodically. When your router connects to your ISP, it's assigned an available IP from a pool. The next time you reconnect — or after a set period — you may get a different one.

Who uses it: Almost all home internet users. Your ISP assigns dynamic IPs by default because it's more efficient — they can recycle addresses from users who are offline.

How often does it change? It varies by ISP. Some change your IP daily, some weekly, some only when you reboot your router. You can check your current IP at IPLocator and compare it next week.

What is a Static IP Address?

A static IP address is permanently assigned to your connection and never changes. You have to specifically request one from your ISP, and they usually charge extra for it.

Who uses it: Businesses hosting websites or servers, remote workers needing consistent VPN access, security cameras, and anyone who needs a reliable, fixed address.

Cost: Typically $5–15/month added to your internet bill, depending on your ISP.

Key Differences

| Feature | Dynamic IP | Static IP | |---------|-----------|-----------| | Changes over time | Yes | No | | Cost | Included | Extra fee | | Security | Slightly better (changes regularly) | Fixed target | | Hosting servers | Difficult | Easy | | Remote access | Unreliable | Reliable | | Who uses it | Home users | Businesses, developers |

Does Having a Dynamic IP Improve Privacy?

Slightly — since your IP changes, it's harder for websites to track you across long time periods using IP alone. However, your ISP still knows which IP was assigned to you at any given time, and they keep logs. For real privacy, a VPN is far more effective than relying on IP rotation.

How to Check if Your IP is Static or Dynamic

There's no direct way to check from outside your network. The easiest method:

  1. Visit IPLocator and note your current IP address
  2. Restart your router
  3. Visit again — if the IP changed, you have a dynamic IP

You can also log into your router's admin panel (usually 192.168.1.1) and look for your WAN IP settings. If it says "DHCP", your IP is dynamic.

Do You Need a Static IP?

For most home users: no. A dynamic IP works fine for browsing, streaming, and gaming.

You might need a static IP if you:

Otherwise, save the money and stick with dynamic.
