How to Check if Your IP Address is Blacklisted
A blacklisted IP can get your emails blocked and websites flagged. Here's how to check your IP reputation and fix it if you're listed.
If your IP address has been blacklisted, your emails might be going to spam, websites could be blocking you, and your internet traffic may be flagged as suspicious. Here's how to check — and what to do about it.
What is an IP Blacklist?
An IP blacklist (also called a blocklist or DNSBL — DNS-based Blackhole List) is a database of IP addresses associated with spam, malware, or other malicious activity. Email servers, firewalls, and security services check these lists to decide whether to trust traffic from a given IP.
There are hundreds of blacklists maintained by different organisations. The most widely used include:
- Spamhaus — the most respected, used by most email providers
- Barracuda — used by many corporate email systems
- SURBL — focused on URLs found in spam messages
- MXToolbox — aggregates multiple lists
Why Would Your IP Be Blacklisted?
Your IP might end up on a blacklist if:
- You sent spam — intentionally or because malware on your network did
- Your IP was previously assigned to a spammer — ISPs recycle dynamic IPs
- You're on a shared IP — hosting providers sometimes blacklist entire ranges
- A device on your network was compromised — a botnet infection can send spam without your knowledge
How to Check if Your IP is Blacklisted
Step 1: Find your current IP address at IPLocator.
Step 2: Visit one of these free lookup tools and enter your IP:
- MXToolbox Blacklist Check — checks 100+ lists at once
- Spamhaus Lookup — the most authoritative check
- MultiRBL — checks 200+ lists
Step 3: Review the results. Most tools show a green/red indicator for each list.
How to Get Removed from a Blacklist
If you're listed, the removal process depends on the list:
-
Identify the cause first — run a malware scan on all devices on your network. Check your router for unusual outbound connections. Fix the root cause before requesting removal, or you'll be re-listed.
-
For Spamhaus — visit their removal page and follow the instructions. They typically require you to demonstrate the issue is resolved.
-
For dynamic IPs — simply reconnect your router. Your ISP will assign you a new IP, and the old one goes back into the pool. Here's how to change your IP address →
-
For static IPs — contact the blacklist operator directly. Most have a self-service delisting form. Some require a waiting period (usually 24–48 hours after the spam activity stops).
Will a VPN Help?
Yes and no. A VPN gives you a different IP, so you'll bypass any blocks on your current IP. However, VPN exit node IPs are also frequently blacklisted. If you need to send email reliably, a VPN isn't the right solution — fix the underlying listing instead.
How to Prevent Getting Blacklisted
- Keep all devices updated and malware-free
- Use a reputable email sending service (Mailchimp, SendGrid) rather than sending bulk email from your own IP
- Monitor your IP reputation regularly — set a reminder to check monthly
- If you run a mail server, configure SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records correctly
A clean IP reputation is important for anyone running a small business, home server, or email newsletter. Regular checks take less than a minute and can save a lot of headaches.
